Our energy

What if energy became something we designed around efficiency first?

Generation is the visible part. The quieter part is what a place no longer needs, when it needs the rest, and who owns the kit that supplies it.

Available now is not the same as developing, and developing is not the same as solved.

Why rethink it?

Energy is a design problem before it is a fuel problem.

A draughty building, a peak-time kettle, a street of cars idling at the same hour: these are energy decisions disguised as habit. Adding generation without asking what the energy is for can be expensive theatre.

The useful order is usually: reduce demand, shift demand, then generate and store. Heat in UK buildings is a large part of the story. Electricity is getting cleaner. Storage, networks and who owns them decide whether that cleanliness reaches ordinary rooms.

What is already possible?

Be technically honest about maturity.

Available now

Efficiency, heat pumps, solar PV, wind and hydro where the site fits

Insulation, better kit, certified heat pumps, rooftop and ground-mounted solar, onshore and offshore wind, and hydro at suitable sites are working technologies. They still need the right building, grid connection, and maintenance.

Available now

Community energy and ordinary demand shifting

Community-owned solar and wind exist across the UK. Running wet appliances in cheaper, cleaner hours is unglamorous and real. Home batteries are available; economics vary by tariff and house.

Developing

Flexibility, smart grids, vehicle-to-grid, district heat

Networks that can listen to demand, cars that can discharge, and heat networks that reuse waste heat are growing. Standards, streets and buildings decide whether they scale.

Experimental

Long-duration storage and hydrogen in the right jobs

Long-duration storage is being trialled because weather is not a timetable. Hydrogen is a serious industrial question and a weak domestic heating slogan. Treat it as a tool with a narrow fit, not a universal substitute for gas.

Ideas worth exploring

Use, then generate, then store, then share.

Demand

The building is the first power station

Every kilowatt-hour not required is a kilowatt-hour that does not need a field, a turbine or a wire. This is why homes and energy are one subject.

Heat

Heat pumps, solar thermal, shared heat

Move heat, store heat, recover heat. Solar thermal and district heating are old ideas with modern versions. Waste heat from industry is a resource only if someone connects it.

Store

Batteries, thermal stores, longer duration

Short storage is common. Seasonal and multi-day storage is the harder, more important problem in a weather-based system.

Own

Community generation

Local ownership can keep value in a place and make the infrastructure legible. It still has to connect to a real grid and a real business case.

Move

Microgrids and smart operation

A campus, harbour or street that can island briefly or share power internally. Useful in some geographies. Not a lifestyle accessory.

Careful

Hydrogen only where it earns its keep

High-heat industry, some storage, some transport. Piping it into every boiler is not the same class of idea, and the Climate Change Committee has been blunt about that.

Seed worth planting

Count the energy you no longer need.

The cleanest unit of energy is the one the building no longer needs.

Real projects and organisations

Authoritative places to keep learning.

Small seeds

Investigations at household scale.

  • Find the standby loads you forgot were on.
  • If you can, compare a smart-meter app with how the house actually feels.
  • Search for a community energy group before assuming the only model is a distant utility.
  • Treat a boiler replacement as a building question, not only a product question.
  • If money is tight, start with draughts, loft, and the room you actually live in. Perfection is not the first step.

Bigger seeds

Streets, industry and the grid.

Heat as a network, not only a box on the wall.

Shared loops, waste heat, and thermal stores can serve dense places better than a thousand slightly wrong individual swaps.

Plan flexibility as infrastructure.

Storage, demand response and interconnectors are as much the energy system as turbines are.

Keep fuel poverty in the room.

A clever tariff that only the well-housed can use is not a just transition.

Put hydrogen where electricity struggles.

Do not spend a scarce fuel on jobs that a heat pump and a better wall can do.

Important reality check

Weather, wires, money and physics still govern the system.

Wind and solar vary. Networks need upgrading. Planning disputes are real. Minerals for batteries and turbines have their own landscapes. Heat pumps hum, and neighbours notice. Off-grid romanticism does not power a hospital. Community energy still has to sell power into a market it did not write.

International bodies such as the IEA publish sober comparisons. Use them when a social post sounds like a finished revolution.
